How Does It Function?

In essence, we are making our bodies only take 6 breaths a minute. You can do this in a number of ways as described below but what is important is the slowing of the amount of breaths we take.

  • Take 5 seconds in and 5 seconds out, or;

  • for calming breathe 4 seconds in and 6 seconds out, or;

  • for activation and energy, breathe 6 seconds in and 4 seconds out.

Find a Quiet spot: Take a seat comfortably in a spot where you won't be bothered. Breathe with Intent: Allow your belly to rise as you inhale deeply through your nose for a count of four. Gently exhale through your mouth for a count of six, as if you were releasing tension. Put your hand over your heart to concentrate. Imagine your breath entering and leaving your body through your heart as you breathe. Feel the constant rhythm. Add a Sprinkling of Love: Consider something or someone that brings you joy. Imagine transmitting love and uplifting thoughts from your heart with each breath.

Enjoy the Advantages: After a few minutes of this breathing rhythm, you'll feel a sense of calm sweep over you. Your heart rate and mind start to match up, which relieves tension and improves your mood.

This particular form of breathing has benefits after only a few rounds, but is most effective when done for 5 minutes.

Heart coherence breathing is supported by research and is not just a feel-good technique. Your autonomic nerve system, which regulates your body's stress reaction, is brought back into balance by it. The "rest and digest" mode (parasympathetic) and the "fight or flight" response (sympathetic) are both activated when you relax the sympathetic response and activate the parasympathetic mode.
